The artichoke ( Cynara scolymus ) is a medicinal plant consumed since ancient times. It is customary to consume the flower, although it is in the leaves where the most beneficial substances are concentrated.

Properties of the artichoke

Artichoke leaves contain a substance called cynarin , one of the most outstanding active ingredients in this plant.

The artichoke is consumed mainly for the following therapeutic properties:

  • Digestive : Cinnarin stimulates the production of bile in the liver, which favors the digestion of fats. For this reason, the artichoke is usually recommended in slow and heavy digestions, accompanied by aerophagia or burning.
  • Hepatoprotective : the artichoke leaf extract has protective properties for the liver.
  • Hypocholesterolemic : Artichoke leaves contain different compounds and flavonoids that help maintain normal levels of blood cholesterol.
