Intake of 1 capsule a day accompanied by a glass of water is recommended.

Precautions

Contraindicated in: pregnancy, lactation, children, patients with liver or kidney disease, hypersensitivity to essential oil or balsam of Peru, tachycardia, irritable bowel syndrome (due to its stimulating effect on the central nervous system). It is recommended not to associate with other psychostimulant plants (coffee, tea, guarana, cola, yerba mate, etc). In patients with a history of breast cancer, its use is not recommended due to the possibility of damiana interaction with progesterone receptors. Very high doses of damiana can cause purging effects, tachycardia, insomnia, headache and irritability of the mucous membranes of the urinary tract. A case of toxicity in humans has been mentioned after oral administration of 200 g of damiana extract, with tetaniform-type seizures and paroxysms similar to those of strychnine poisoning. Patients with hypoglycemic therapy should use caution when combining oral antidiabetics with damiana extracts, at the risk of increasing hypoglycemia. Damiana can interfere with the absorption of iron and other minerals. Although there are not enough studies on the toxicity of maca, secular consumption as food in Peru is indicative of its low toxicity. On the other hand, in clinical trials in which 3 g of dried maca root were administered daily, over a period of 12 weeks, no side effects were reported. In case of pregnancy and lactation its use is not recommended due to the absence of safety data in these circumstances. Due to its vitamin K content, it could decrease the efficacy of anticoagulant drugs. It is recommended not to administer together with active drugs on the CNS, because, in experimental animals, maca showed a stimulating effect. Although it has not been shown to modify testosterone and estradiol levels, caution is recommended in case of hormone-dependent malignancies, as well as in women undergoing contraceptive therapy.
