Manuka honey must meet the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) specifications as stated in its guidance document 'Interim Labeling Guidance for Manuka Honey' dated July 31, 2014.

This definition specifies a set of five science-based markers that identify the origin and quality of New Zealand Manuka honey. These markers must be met for the honey to be called New Zealand Manuka honey. Only honey that meets these new standards will be certified for export as genuine New Zealand Manuka honey.
