Properties and benefits of Plantago Ovata

The mucilages (substances present in the Plantago Ovata) absorb water when ingested, first in the stomach and then in the intestine, forming a non-assimilable gel in the body. This gel increases the volume of the fecal mass and decreases its excessive viscosity in cases of constipation, making intestinal peristaltic movements more effective, and facilitating evacuation by a mechanism that does not irritate the intestinal walls. It is therefore very successful to treat chronic constipation with plantago ovata. An added benefit is that it does not produce the typical dependency of most conventional laxatives.
